100 per centers Oxton

beat champions

 

MATCH of the day in the ECB Premier League was that in which Oxton stretched their 100 per cent record at the top by beating reigning champions Nantwich by one wicket at Townfield Lane after their last pair had added 29 priceless runs.

 Nantwich posted 169 thanks to 51 runs apiece from Louis Bentley and Ray Doyle, while Sri Lankan paceman Guyan Fernando claimed 4-67 and Andy Birley 3-35.

 Oxton looked down and out when their Worcestershire all-rounder Gareth Andrew was dismissed for 42 and the ninth wicket fell at 141 with Dabbers’ paceman Jimmy Warrington thirsting for a five-for. But Oxton’s outstanding young all-rounder Ross Dixon (58) and Andy Birley (11) crafted a partnership of 29 to steer their side home at 170-9 with one over left.  Warrington took 4-59 as Nantwich came so close to ending the Wirralians’ superb start to the season.

 Hyde stay second after another comfortable victory, this time by six wickets against Toft at Werneth Low.  Toft were restricted to 175-9, Jamie Hancock 50, Toby Drummond 44 not out, Chris Tipper 5-45. Hyde went on to win at 176-4, Tom Twiney 43, while Tipper finished off a good day with an unbeaten 46 and Danny Hancock took 3-52.

 

First wins for Alderley Edge and Macclesfield

Alderley Edge registered their first win by the surprisingly wide margin of seven wickets at Chester Boughton Hall, who are still waiting for the return of star batsman Warren Goodwin after a bad hand injury.  Kumar Sarna, CBH’s talented Aussie batsman top scored with 56 and Lee Dixon 47, Mark Warnes claiming 3-33 and Jason Whittaker 3-39. .Alderley profited from an increasingly fluent unbroken third wicket partnership of 150 between skipper Alan Day and wicket-keeper Adam Worrall, scoring 99 and 75 not out respectively.  Alex Kegg took 3-60.

 Macclesfield also picked up their first 25 pointer at the expense of Urmston.  Khalid Sawas, who scored such an impressive century on his debut for Cheshire six days earlier, top scored with 98 while Aussie James Crosthwaite, 93, helped him add 173 for the third wicket. Adam Syddall took 3-67.  Urmston were bowled out for 157, Lewis Jackson 37, Keith Dickenson 33, Rob Porter 4-37, Ian Tait 4-40.  Macclesfield players and helpers are again to be praised for their efforts to get a saturated ground fit for play.

 There was a tight finish to Neston’s game against Didsbury at Parkgate, in which bowlers dominated.  None did better than the evergreen Chris Finegan, whose 5-39 return off 16 overs helped bowl Didsbury out for 127. Neston then collapsed after tea and were indebted to middle order batsmen Sam McPherson, 35 not out and Ian Gill, 26, for their winning response of 128-9.

 Last season’s promoted Division One clubs met at Marple, where the home side emerged winners by 99 runs against hitherto undefeated Widnes. After a late start caused by a wet outfield, Marple did well to total 219 –6, Aussie Andy McGuinness, 90 (four sixes) and the in-form Andrew Hall, 72 (nine fours) adding 127 for the third wicket. Widnes’ batting failed badly after tea and they were all out for 120, although this was not the fault of opener Danny Naughton who carried his bat for the second time this season for 75, adding to previous scores of 95 not out and 60. .His colleagues had no answer to the spin of Jo Cash, 5-32 and Andy Greasley, 3-56.

Four in row for Grappenhall

 

IN a hurry to regain a Premiership place, Grappenhall recorded a fourth straight First Division win with a seven wickets stroll at Bramhall.

 It took a solid 48 from skipper Nick Cantello for Bramhall to creep into three figures, their innings closing on 101-8, Steve Titchard bowling unchanged to return 3-46. Grappenhall knocked off the runs at 105-3 in 16 overs, Richard Green 33.

 Sale overwhelmed Oulton Park by eight wickets at Little Budworth and are joint top with a faultless record from four outings. Using the experience he has gained in first-class cricket with Bradford / Leeds UCCE, Rick Moore contributed a remarkable 104 to Park’s all out tally of 146, leg-spinner Rick Halkon claiming 4-70. Sale responded with a comfortable 150-2, the second of the Halkon brothers, Danny, closing with an unbeaten 56.

 Bredbury St. Mark’s recorded their first win in Division One, by five wickets at home to Cheadle Hulme whom they bowled out for 86, Tom Briscoe contributing an beaten 66. Chris Wood took 4-18, Veejay Muslapuram 3-17 and John Usher 3-27.  Peyter Zybrands’ unbeaten 39 saw St. Mark’s home at 90-5.

 

Simon Marshall 6-36 and 84no  for Bowdon

Bowdon struggled to top a modest Irby tally on a real bowler’s wicket at Mill Hill Road where the home side were dismissed for 103, chiefly by former Lancashire leg spinner Simon Marshall, with 6-36 off 16 overs.  Alex Hughes scored a sturdy 50. After tea, Rob Houghton’s nagging accuracy earned him figures of 3-15 off 11 overs and made Bowdon fight hard for their 117-7, Marshall again responding supremely well with an unbeaten 84. Next highest scorer with nine was opener Jon Gray.

 New South Wales batsman Mike Rixon hit the League’s highest individual score of the day, his fine 114 off 132 balls helping Bollington close on 204-9 at Brooklands, Rab Nawaz 4-51.  Brooklands had their last pair to thank for a reply of 139-9, A.J. Hart 48, skipper Toby Ward claiming3-14.

 Christleton had the better of a drawn game against Heaton Mersey at Little Heath where the return of Indian all-rounder Varon Sood had a calming affect. He took 3-39 to help restrict ‘Mersey to 140-8 (Rashid Amin 59) after his own side’s batsmen had put together an improved 189-7, Iroshan de Silva top-scoring with 87 and Hassan Rashid taking 3-60.

 

Hat-trick for Tyler Eiselt

 

THE season’s first League championship hat-trick came in Division Two and was bowled by Tyler Eiselt of Poynton in his side’s 77 runs victory at Malpas, who remain bottom.

 Poynton totalled 169-8, number nine batsman Matt Heathcote top scoring with an unbeaten 29 to help steer a recovery from 124-8, Maneesha Nissanka, 4-68.  Malpas mustered just 92, Tony Crabb top-scoring with 20 against Eiselt whose figures were 5-2-6-4 included the wickets of Henry Wilson-Theaker, Maneesha Nissanka and Adrian Stubbs off successive deliveries.

 Congleton continue to set a hot pace and their third successive 25 pointer was at the expense of Alvanley, who are struggling after their promotion from the Meller Braggins Cheshire League.  Alvanley were all out for 89, Jack Higginbottom 5-36 and Congleton replied with 84-4.

 

Middlewich impress again

 Middlewich are also going great guns and their third win was at the expense of Upton on a damp wicket at Old Greasby road.  Upton totalled 160-6, Chris Stowell-Smith 67, Jo Huston 50 after which Middlewich got home with three balls to spare at 161-3, Andy Cole 62, James Cornford 42.

 Stockport inflicted a 13 runs defeat on Timperley at Stockport road after posting a modest 153-7, Rob Barber 55, Craig Grindley 3-68. Timperley were all out for 140, Craig Grindley 64, while Mike Green put together a real match-winning burst of 6-30.

 Tattenhall were bowled out for 83 at Cheadle, whose skipper Paul Sperring had a field day with 5-28. Greg Dixon then top-scored with 45 not out as his side went on to enjoy a seven wickets win.

 Warrington are settling down well and they moved into the top half with a 52 runs win achieved in the last over at Stockport Georgians.  Paul Farrar, 55 and Mike Rudd, 36, top-scored in Warrington’s tally of 168-9, Rizwan Jameel taking 4-49.  But apart from Steve Vincent, 36, the Georgians’ batsman never got going after tea and they lost their last wicket at 117 in the game’s 100th over, the damage being done by Kyle Adams, 5-37 and Tom Poole, 4-24.

APPEALS RULINGS

 

A LEAGUE Appeals committee chaired by President Stan Davies has met to consider appeals against two decisions reached by 2nd XI Results Secretary Ian Sharrock, acting for the Cricket Committee.

 

1. Grappenhall 2nd v Neston 2nd Premier Division fixture on Saturday, April 21.

The original decision was that Neston be fined £200 suspended for 12 months for fielding 1st XI captain David Hurst in a 2nd XI match against Grappenhall after his own team’s game had been cancelled earlier in the day. Neston had won by five wickets and took 25 – 10 points.

 The panel upheld Grappenhall’s appeal that Neston had contravened League Regulation 11 which states that in the case of a club flouting the Spirit of the Game or including players at an inappropriate level, they may take action including the deduction of points.

 The panel considered that Neston had fielded a player at an inappropriate level and ruled that they should be deducted all the points gained in the game (25) and Grappenhall be awarded the appropriate number of points (15) to bring their total up to 25.

The panel quashed the £200 suspended fine.

 

2. Stockport appealed against the severity of rulings to strip them of their 2011 2nd XI Division Two championship and to deduct 115 points from their playing record during the current season in Division One, for fielding ineligible overseas player Junaid Samdani in four matches. 

 Stockport did not contest that the player had appeared in four games, stating that they did not realise he was ineligible, a claim accepted by the panel.

 The panel, however, agreed that the penalties had been correctly imposed and confirmed that Stockport, who will remain in Division One, should return the championship trophy and plaque.

 Stockport were also ordered to forfeit their £25 deposit.

 The results of both appeals are final and binding.

Cheshire top group

CHESHIRE marched to the top of Group 3 in the Minor Counties Cup by recording a second successive victory, at Saffron Walden on Sunday against Cambridgeshire (writes Jim Law).

 As in their nail-biting victory against Cumberland at Christleton the previous week, the Cheshire batting stars were skipper James Duffy (Hyde) and Khalid Sawas (Macclesfield) who followed their centuries with fine innings of 69 apiece in a decent tally of 269-6.  Supporting knocks came from Scott Kirwin (Hyde), 26 and Urmston’s Adam Syddall, 21.

 Cheshire soon got among the Cambridgeshire batsmen after the break, their key bowler being seamer Scott Kirwin who took two early wickets to put the hosts on the back foot at 23-3. With left-arm spinners Jonny Fawcett (Didsbury) and York’s ex-Hyde man Danny Woods turning the screws, it was left to David Clark to lead a fight back with a stirring innings of 88.  Fawcett finished up with 3-15 and Kirwin 4-47 as Cambridge were bowled out for 146, 116 runs short. 

New ground may be needed

Cheshire may be unable to stage their last group game against Herefordshire as scheduled next Sunday due to the wet state of the Bramhall ground.

 Continuous bad weather has left the outfield saturated and it has not been possible to for groundsman Richard Cragg to do much work on the square. In addition a collapsed nearby main drain has meant that the groundstaff have had to pump water away from their own drainage system.

 County officials are trying to fine an alternative venue if play at Bramhall is not possible and any developments will be posted on the Cheshire website Cheshire-county-cricket-club.org.uk.  More information can also be obtained from secretary Derrick Hastings on 01606 889 059 (home) or 07989 114 691 (mobile).

Vets’ cricket

WINNERS of the Spitfire 60 Plus county championship in each of the past two seasons, Cheshire made a good start to the new campaign with a five wickets victory over Yorkshire at Ackworth on Tuesday, May 8.

 Yorkshire were dismissed for 68 by Ted Williams (Runcorn) with 3-17 and Chris Lees (Romiley) 2-15. Cheshire responded with 71-5, skipper Andy Hurworth (Irby) top-scoring with 24.

 The 60s are next in action against Lincolnshire at Chester on Tuesday, May 15 (1.30 p.m.).

CHESHIRE 50s’ friendly against Staffordshire at Chester Boughton Hall on Wednesday last week was rained off. They are in action in another friendly against Shropshire at Wem on Wednesday, May 16 (1.30 p.m.).

RedInsure T20 hat-trick

 

CHESTER Boughton Hall and Oulton Park became the first clubs to reach the third round of the RedInsure T20 on Tuesday last week.

 In Chester’s narrow win at Upton, teenage 2d XI spinner Harry Killoran took a hat-trick in a return of 6-19, claiming the wickets of Harry Ingram, Simon McGowan and  Darrin Clark.  For CBH, Aussie batsman Kumar Sarna cracked an unbeaten 81 off 56 balls

 Remaining second round games should be arranged ASAP.  Home clubs should then notify co-ordinator John Hacking (01244 814 110; jhacking@gmail.com) who will appoint umpires.

 O About the recent 1st round game between Heaton Mersey and Sale, ‘Mersey’s James Emmerson writes:

  “Sale’s innings of 142-9 went the full 20 overs, but ‘Mersey took too long to bowl them and the umpires reduced ‘Mersey’s innings from 20 to 19, as per rule. The umpires confirmed that if Sale had been similarly tardy, ‘Mersey would have received 10 penalty runs for every over Sale failed to complete in time. However, Sale bowled their 19 overs in an exemplary 62 minutes. Perhaps this might serve as a reminder of the regulations as other teams may well fall short as the competition progresses”.

Over 40s wash-out

ALTHOUGH it has to be confirmed by two clubs, it is believed that no games were played due to rain in the opening programme of fixtures in the Over 40s section sponsored by TailorMade Group Pensions on Wednesday last week.

 Timperley conceded their fixture at Sale Silverbacks in the North-East group as they could not raise a team.   According to rule Timperley will receive no points and Sale two points as will all clubs whose matches were cancelled 

 Fixtures may be re-arranged by mutual agreement and must be played within 14 days.  All  new dates must be notified to the Competition Secretary.

 No information has been received re the games at Oxton and Urmston. As a seasonal one-off gesture, these clubs will be excused the statutory £15 fines.

ALDERLEY EDGE have become the 29th full member club to register an overseas player. He is Zaymn Chapman, a 19 year old batsman who plays for Wanneroo Districts CC in Perth grade cricket in Western Australia. 

 

HALE BARNS have registered Indian-born batsman Afzal Shaikh, aged 35, to play in Third XI cricket only. Afzal lived in Qatar until arriving to live and work in the UK in December, 2011.
