DUMELOW DECIMATES CORNWALL - Day 3 Report
By Neil Goulding (Cheshire Press Officer, 07931 376811)
OULTON Park all rounder Nathan Dumelow almost guided Cheshire
to an unlikely victory in their Minor Counties Championship-western
division game with Cornwall at Alderley Edge.
A Cornish victory-potentially their first in 20 meetings with
Cheshire, seemed the most likely outcome at the start of the final
day with the hosts still 54 runs behind and only six wickets left.
But Dumelow decimated the Cornish attack and his 114 not out was
later described by skipper Andy Hall as "one of the best
centuries I've seen."
Dumelow's destructive ton plus a 67 run partnership with Adam
Wildig for the ninth wicket helped Cheshire reach 364 leaving
their opponents with the stiff task of notching 172 in 23 overs.
And it proved a tall order virtually from the start as off-spinner
Dumelow came to the fore again; this time with the ball.
He finished with four victims for just two runs off four overs
and with Walshaw's Jason Whittaker chipping in with three wickets,
Cornwall faced an unlikely defeat.
"We had about 15 balls at their numbers nine and 10,"
said Hall.
"But if someone had given me a draw at start of play I would
have jumped at the chance.
"We were staring down the barrel this morning and the game
could have been all over by lunchtime.
"But Nathan came to the rescue with a brilliant innings and
Adam did well, batting for an hour and a half at 10.
"We go to Devon now a week on Sunday and that will be a big
game. I think they've won both their matches while we've won one
and drawn this game."
Cheshire took 11 points from an entertaining three days that contained
150 for Cornwall's Anthony Penberthy.

CHESHIRE SHOW FIGHTING SPIRIT BUT CORNWALL ON TOP - Day 2 Report
By Neil Goulding (Cheshire Press Officer, Mobile 07931 376811)
CHESHIRE showed plenty of character having had their backs against
the wall on the second day of their Minor Counties Championship
Western Division clash at Alderley Edge.
The hosts struggled to post 241 on the opening day, while Cornwall
piled on the runs having been 96-1 overnight to reach 434-8.
But Cheshire kept battling and got to work with the bat, skipper
Andy Hall leading from the front with 57, which included nine
fours.
However, with one day remaining and with the home side still 54
runs adrift at 139-4, Cornwall are still in the driving seat.
Cheshire will have to bat well today if they are going to force
a victory, although a draw at this stage would be a good result.
"We bowled well, but Cornwall batted very well and they have
the advantage at the moment," admitted Hall, whose side batted
51 overs.
"We are going to have to bat for most of the last day if
we are to stand any chance of winning,
"Unfortunately we lost four wickets and Cornwall have done
enough to have an advantage."
A view echoed by Cheshire chairman of cricket Gerry Hardstaff,
who said: "We bowled quite well, but Cornwall have some good
batsman and we just couldn't stop the runs.
"It's going to be tough to get a victory, but if we bat well
on the last day then we can stop Cornwall from winning."
Cheshire might have had dismissed Cornwall for a lot less, but
a couple of missed catches allowed the visitors to press on.
Earlier, former Somerset batsman Neil Edwards progressed from
33 to make 137, while ex-Northants batsman Tony Penberthy led
the charge with a brilliant 150.
Chris Schofield was the pick of Cheshire's bowlers with three
wickets, although the former England and Lancashire leg-spinning
all-rounder was expensive.
Left-arm spinner Robin Fisher also chipped in with two wickets,
but a third-wicket stand of 242 between Edwards and Penberty allowed
Cornwall to swing the bat with wickets in hand at the end of the
innings.
Cheshire did claim seven wickets in the day, but the home side
have plenty to do to keep their unbeaten start to the season in
tact.

SCHOFIELD STARS BUT CHESHIRE FIND IT TOUGH GOING
By Neil Goulding (Cheshire Press Officer, Mobile 07931 376811)
FORMER England and Lancashire all-rounder Chris Schofield starred
for Cheshire on the opening day of their Minor Counties Championship
Western Division tussle with Cornwall at Alderley Edge.
The former Red Rose man top-scored with 85, an innings which helped
Cheshire get themselves out of trouble having been 33-3 and 90-5.
Schofield shared a sixth-wicket partnership of 73 with fellow
all-rounder Jason Whittaker (54), a partnership which lasted 77
minutes and 26 overs, but which proved crucial to Cheshire's fightback.
At 208-6 at tea the home side hoped to reach anywhere between
the 275-300 mark, but some tight bowling restricted Cheshire to
241 all out.
A cameo 33 from wicketkeeper Stephen Ogilby also helped the hosts,
the highlight of which was a huge straight hit for six into the
tennis courts.
"We should have scored more runs, but if we bowl well early
on then I'm sure we can get back into the match," said Andy
Hall, the Cheshire captain.
"Some umpiring decisions went against us and we lost early
wickets, but Chris and Jason batted very well together and got
us out of a difficult situation.
"Ideally we need to get some early wickets. If we can do
that I'm sure we can restrict Cornwall and hopefully don't allow
them to get a first innings lead."
Cornwall started badly in their reply and lost opener Martin Pearce
for a duck. Left-arm pace Danny Jones made the breakthrough.
But former Northamptonshire batsman David Roberts steadied the
ship with an unbeaten 51 and left-handed opener Neil Edwards scored
33 not out as the visitors closed the day on 96-1 from 31 overs.
Cornwall have 59 overs, today, in which to build a lead, while
Cheshire will be hoping to make early in-roads and restrict their
opponents to under 250.
"It was a disappointing day for us," revealed Cheshire
chairman of cricket Gerry Hardstaff.
"We didn't bat as well as can do, but there's plenty of time
for us to get back into the match.
"We need to bowl well and break this partnership us as quickly
as possible. Cornwall are a string side, but there's still two
days to go and plenty of cricket to be played."
The day didn't start well for Cheshire with the withdrawal of
pace bowler Jonathan Farrow.
Heaton Mersey's Farrow, a former Worcestershire player, had been
brought in as a late replacement for Dave Pennett, out with a
hamstring injury.
But Farrow tripped and suffered an ankle injury whilst walking
down the stairs on the morning of the match and had to telephone
Hardstaff to inform him of the bad news.
Twelfth man Adam Wildig, of Alderley Edge, was then handed his
debut for the senior side.
"Adam has come into the side," said Hardstaff. "Jonathan
phoned me to say he couldn't play but it's very hard then to get
another player at that time in the morning, especially on the
morning of a match."

PENNETT INJURY LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR FARROW
By Neil Goulding (Cheshire Press Officer, Mobile 07931 376811)
HEATON Mersey pace bowler Jonathan Farrow has replaced the injured
Dave Pennett in Cheshire's team to face Cornwall in the Minor
Counties Championship Western Division clash at Moss Lane, Alderley
Edge, today.
Farrow, formerly of Worcestershire, has been drafted in as a late
replacement in the J W Lees Cheshire side with opening bowler
and former Nottinghamshire quick bowler Pennett forced to withdraw
on the eve of this week's three-day clash.
Twenty-one year-old Farrow is tipped to open the bowling for the
county, while Cheshire junior and Alderley Edge player Adam Wildig
has been brought in as twelfth man following an injury to Hyde's
Tom Young.
Young, who made his first-team Cheshire debut against Wales at
Nantwich last Sunday, injured himself while playing for Cheshire
2nd XI against the Yorkshire Academy, at New Rover in Leeds, last
week.
The promising seam bowler was only unable to bowl in Cheshire's
2nd innings and has sensibly taken time off to seek treatment
for his injury.
Cheshire 12-man team: Andy Hall (Bramhall); Mark Currie (Alderley
Edge); James Duffy (Hyde), Nathan Dumelow, Danny Jones (Oulton
Park); Steve Ogilby, Robin Fisher (Chester Boughton Hall); Chris
Schofield (Littleborough); Jason Whittaker (Walshaw); Alexis Twigg
(Harrogate); Jonathan Farrow (Heaton Mersey). 12th man: Adam Wildig

CHESHIRE KEEP WINNING FORMULA
By Neil Goulding (Cheshire Press Officer, 07931 376811)
CHESHIRE have named an unchanged side for their Minor Counties
Championship Western Division clash with Cornwall, at Alderley
Edge, from June 20-22.
Captain Andy Hall and Chairman of Cricket Gerry Hardstaff have
both agreed not to alter the side which won so handsomely against
Herefordshire, at Kingsland, last week.
Cheshire triumphed by 211 runs and with two sessions to spare
at Luctonians Cricket Club, with star performances from new signings
Chris Schofield, the former England international, Mark Currie
and Nathan Dumelow.
Regular performers Hall and Jason Whittaker also starred as Cheshire
gave themselves a perfect start to their Western Division campaign.
"We played really well against Herefordshire. I don't think
we could have asked for a better start to the season. We thought
there was no reason to change the team because every did so well,"
said Hall.
"We were unlucky to get knocked out of the MCCA Knockout
Cup against Wales, but although we would have preferred to have
won, it now makes us focus our attentions on the Championship."
Cheshire are currently joint-top with Berkshire in the Western
Division with 24 points, with both counties the only two of ten
to register full batting and bowling points.
Cornwall, meanwhile, started their season with a 90-runs defeat
at the hands of Berkshire, at Newbury, picking up just seven points
for their efforts.
"Cornwall will want to bounce back from their defeat, but
so will our players after losing to Wales," revealed Hardstaff.
"We did play some very good cricket against Herefordshire
and deserved to win. That win
has given the players a lot of confidence."
Hyde youngster James Duffy has once again been handed the opportunity
to shine after a good performance at Kingsland, while Danny Jones,
Duffy's University cricket team-mate, is also available having
missed the Wales match.
Tom Young, who claimed two wickets on his debut against Wales,
is included as 12th man, happy to wait for his chance again later
this season.
Schofield, who has been linked with a move to Durham or Sussex,
will play his second Championship game for Cheshire hoping to
continue the good form he showed against Herefordshire, while
the rest of the team are fit and raring to go.
Cheshire 12-man team: Andy Hall (Bramhall); Mark Currie (Alderley
Edge); James Duffy (Hyde), Nathan Dumelow, Danny Jones (Oulton
Park); Steve Ogilby, Robin Fisher (Chester Boughton Hall); Chris
Schofield (Littleborough); Jason Whittaker (Walshaw); Dave Pennett,
Alexis Twigg (Harrogate). 12th man: Tom Young (Hyde).
