DEPLETED CHESHIRE LOSE IN C & G TROPHY
Cheshire's successful season finished on a disappointing note
as their depleted side lost their 2nd round
Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy 2002 match against Cornwall at
Toft.
Three of Cheshire's leading players who had contributed much to
Cheshire's cause during the season were sidelined through injury.
Andrew Hall had a sprained ankle, Paul Bryson a leg injury and
Neil Cross a broken hand. Additionally Simon Renshaw was unavailable
for this match which had been postponed for 24 hours due to rain.
Fielding first Cheshire's bowling was never controlled enough
to contain Cornwall's top order. They reached 212 for three without
much difficulty with Ben Price scoring 74 and their South African
all-rounder Steve Pope 59. These two put on 116 for the third
wicket before Cheshire's Indian Test player Abby Kuruvilla, finishing
with a flourish, took three wickets in the final over, ending
with 4 for 21 as Cornwall totalled 217 for 8 in their 45 overs.
Cheshire's reply got off to the worst possible start when their
Captain, Ian Cockbain, was bowled for a duck in his last match
before retiring from the Minor Counties scene. This set the tone
for the innings which never looked like coming to terms with the
target. Nathan Wood batted, defiantly to reach a half century
but nobody was able to stay with him for long and the innings
declined to 151 all out.
