Day 3 Report

By Neil Goulding

CHESHIRE were denied victory at Dean Park as Dorset battled back from the brink to snatch a draw.

Having led by 135 runs overnight, Cheshire were indebted to new signing Graeme Archer (86) as they set an imposing target of 272 for Dorset to chase from just over 60 overs.

The visitors followed up their form with the bat with some excellent bowling from Oulton Park duo Jason Whittaker and Danny Jones, and former Nottinghamshire paceman Dave Pennett, which saw the home side reeling at 78-5 at tea.

And an early run-out after the resumption left Dorset in real trouble with plenty of overs to bat out on the final day of an intriguing Western Division tussle.

However, stubborn batting from Dorset skipper Tim Lamb, who made a defiant 39 not out, made sure Cheshire were denied a win on the South West coast .

Whittaker was the pick of Cheshire ’s bowlers with figures of 3-34 from 11 overs, while Pennett finished with 2-37.

But a draw was not the result Cheshire had been looking for having dominated the match from start to finish.

“I’m disappointed because we had a golden opportunity to win the game,” admitted Cheshire chairman Gerry Hardstaff.

“You could say that Dorset were a little bit negative and were never going for the win, but we had them in real trouble at tea and should have won.

“The problem was that we didn’t push home our advantage. We should have got 22 points for a win instead of 10 draw points.”

A view shared by Andy Hall, the Cheshire skipper, who didn’t play in the match, but travelled down to support his teammates despite a rib-injury. Simon Renshaw took the captain’s reigns in Hall’s absence.

“We controlled the game, so to not have won was a real shame,” said Hall, who is hopeful of returning to the Cheshire side in time for the county’s next game, against Wiltshire at Alderley Edge.

“Hopefully I’ll be fit for the Wiltshire match,” added Hall. “We’ve played well for long periods of this game and we fancied our chances of beating Dorset , but we just didn’t do enough.

“It’s going to be very difficult for us to win the Division now, but we’ve got to keep going and try and get a victory against Wiltshire. They will have a decent side but they are a team I think we have a good chance of beating.”
